Brief outage July 2nd
On 7/2/2010 admin wrote in from (208.64.nnn.nnn)

A routine reboot following a Windows Update revealed that the Ncdsa.com server was no longer reboot safe. The fix involved a 100mi round trip to the data center so I could press the F1 key to advance past a RAID card low battery warning message during the POST. Doh.Probable maintenance window in the coming weeks to install a new RAID card battery and upgrade firmware.

Yes, please roll back to the old format Adam. It was a bit chaotic, but obviously chaos has its place.Thank god the contest calendar is intact, but I don't even see that being used much outside the Northwest slalom crew.Even if you had to just dump the last few months of posts and revert "time machine" style, I think it would be worth it!

System maintenance Jan 17th
On 1/18/2010 admin wrote in from (208.64.nnn.nnn)

The updates/maintenance are finished. We succeeded in updating/patching all the elements of Ncdsa.com to the most current releases. We also removed from the main forum page many obsolete/little used forums as there were simply way too many. Content from those forums is still available to members via the site's search function.Regarding the conversion of select forums to so-called Town Hall style, we aborted this effort mid-way for a number of reasons, most having to do with either poor usability or phpBB limitations. Sorry to disappoint fans of the original Ncdsa.com, but modern threaded forums are here to stay. What we are working on next is a mobile device interface so iPhone, Blackberry, an Android phone owners can use Ncdsa.com in a smaller, more mobile-friendly format. Thanks to our programmer Gregory for finding time in his impossibly busy college schedule to work on Ncdsa.com.

Welcome to Ncdsa.com 2.0!
On 1/15/2010 admin wrote in from (208.64.nnn.nnn)

At long last, Ncdsa's programmer is available and poised to implement alterations and improvements to the site. Expect to see some/all of the following in the coming days:o Pruning of obsolete/little-used forums; about half of the current forums will go. Their content will still be available via Search but will not accept new posts and will not take up space on the main forum listing, i.e. the top page.o Conversion of select forums to Town-Hall (i.e. single topic) style with newest posts on top, i.e. Z-A date ordering.o Improved colors/fonts.One small but significant change was already implemented, namely exposing the [i:m7wgkex9]View Active Topics[/i:m7wgkex9] link to unregistered and not logged in users. Thanks for your ongoing patience as we work to improve Ncdsa.com!

Seems the only activity is from the Brazilians or the Brits. (not that there is anything wrong with that) I'm from Norcal and there is no longer anything here for me, I used to enjoy the old style, and discussions from all over. Not clunky at all, if you missed something just go back a page or 2 and catch up. I saw some spam and tried to figure out how to report it, but couldnt figure it out and dont want to spend the time if its not fairly easy. Just my 2 cents.

[quote="Michael":ibyu1her]Its dead.I dont see any reason for keeping it this new format. So what if some people find it easier to follow..fact is there is NOTHING to follow!!!!Take a bold move and roll the old forum back.[/quote:ibyu1her]Michael, you are 100% correct!NCDSA is dead. It used to be "the place" to post about slalom and racing. Now it is just another PHP site.I used to post on NCDSA and not really worry about ISSA or Silverfish. The important info would get movedthere by itself. It's been a slow death, but I think it started when Adam started censoring lots of posts and then killed the vendor forumunless people paid him. His site had power then, now it has none. I guess he can still ban me...People love a good soap opera or a nice train wreck. Some of the old discussions on NCDSA were just that. You wanted to tune in just to make sure you weren't missing anything in the first "screen" of posts becauseit was such a pain to search or scroll back in time. Now people have to triple post here and on the other 2. That is ridiculous! NCDSA lost it's edge and character. If I was running another big event, and wanted to get the word out, I would just post on the other 2...There is no longer anything special about NCDSA. Everyone might as well move on to Silverfish which is active.Since the new site has been dumped on us, I have noticed that the Brazilan's seem to really like it. Maybe you should rename it?There are more Brazilan posts than the rest of the world combined.I guess the spammers are liking it also...

I'm considering a further site reorg in an attempt to placate both groups:o Split the site's forums into two main sections: Town Hall style (like the original Ncdsa) and Threaded style (like Ncdsa 2.0). Town Hall forums would have a single topic that was sorted Z-A by post date. Members would be able to bookmark topics for easy access to the most recent posts. Candidates for Town Hall are: Slalom, UK, and Speedboarding. Candidates for Threaded are: Equipment reviews, Vendor's Corner, and Buy-Sell-trade. Suggestions are welcome here!o Prune/archive little used forums, namely the ones that still have one topic (the system archives) months after the conversion to phpBB. This would significantly reduce the number of inactive forums and put greater focus on the active forums.o Activate a mobile device interface to allow streamlined access from iPhones, Android phones, et al.o Restyle the fonts and colors (i.e. the site's theme) to one more reminiscent of the original Ncdsa. It was a mistake to abandon Ncdsa's look and feel after 13 years, I'll admit, but our programmer was running out of time as last summer was drawing to a close and his college classes were beckoning, so phpBB's default theme was used.

I didnt 'discover' it much like I havent discovered lots of things. I have neither the time nor the inclination to bother. nor would many people. We want things to work out of the box.I come from a graphic design background with an expertise in human interfaces. Helping to design menu systems for one of the early paint systems and video on demand enterprises. These were specifically designed to be used by people who had no computer knowledge and in many cases people whos first language wasnt English. If I cant find these new features it tells me that the format is wrong.I saw a post to say that the new forum isnt 'lurker' friendly. Thats entirely correct. I want to be able to get an idea of what is going on elswhere, I dont need to post, but I do want to 'lurk'.....easily.I am sitting here looking at a stack of emoticons, a font colour pallete that serves no function, and and entirely blue design that is cold, not the Californian colourful warm graphics of before. It reminds me of a German news channel....boring. No favicon. In the old format you had something that worked. That was different. That while maybe clunky, was a hell of a lot easier to read than this one. The whole interface is a mess.have a look here: and weep: [url:1to4un2k]http://web.archive.org/ web/*/http://ncdsa.com[/url:1to4un2k]The number of dead threads makes this place look dead.

Perhaps you would care to put into more specific terms what your requirements are? I posted a poll on Ncdsa a few weeks ago where one of the questions was: [i:29x9j3o6]Should Ncdsa revert to mono-topic (i.e. non-threaded) forums?[/i:29x9j3o6] Feedback was mixed. What are your -- and other UK members' -- thoughts on adopting this model for the Skateboarding in United Kingdom forum? It would mean doing away with threads entirely, combining all recent threads into one, and consolidating [i:29x9j3o6]that[/i:29x9j3o6] with the archived threads from the old server, sorted Z-A so the most recent posts were always on top of page 1. Assuming you had [i:29x9j3o6]Log me on automatically each visit[/i:29x9j3o6] activated you would be able to call up your snapshot of all things UK Slalom with a single click.

I tended to agree with their rationale, namely that since Ncdsa was using a well-known standard (i.e. phpBB) that it should behave as the thousands of other phpBB sites do for sake of consistency and ease of use. Ncdsa 1.0 was a one-off design of my own making so it had no navigational standards to satisfy.
